Office Hours, Conducting elections in the largest U.S. election jurisdiction with Dean Logan, Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk

Michael Alvarez, PhD, Flintridge Foundation Professor of Political and Computational Social Science at Caltech and Co-Director, Linde Center for Science, Society, and Policy (LCSSP).
In this episode of Office Hours, we'll talk with Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan about the November 5, 2024 election already underway throughout the United States., including in Los Angeles County, the nation's largest and most diverse local election jurisdiction serving 5.4 million registered voters, over 500 political districts, and providing election services in 18 languages. We'll discuss just how all of this happens while Mr. Logan's office also simultaneously records all real property documents, maintains vital records, issues and records marriage licenses, performs civil marriage ceremonies, and coordinates records management policy and training programs for Los Angeles County.
Mr. Logan is a former President and serves on the Executive Board for the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials (CACEO) and serves the Board of Directors for the National Association of Election Officials, also known as the Election Center. He sits on the Advisory Board for the MIT Election Data Science Lab and Advisory Committees to the Auburn University and California State University Northridge MPA programs.
Mr. Logan has 30 years of experience in state and local government – including serving as the Chief Elections Official and Recorder of Deeds in the largest jurisdictions in the states of Washington and California and as State Elections Director in the state of Washington. Additionally, Mr. Logan served as the elected County Clerk (Clerk of Superior Court and Jury Commissioner) and Chief Deputy County Auditor in Kitsap County, Washington. Mr. Logan holds professional certifications as an Elections and Registration Administrator and as a Professional County Official in addition to his academic degrees.
